 "Your Prescription for Roofing Problems"

Roof Pitch and Slope

The roof pitch or roof slope is the single most important measurement for your roof.

Roof Pitch/Slope: The roof pitch or slope is the rise over the run. In other words you take the amount of vertical rise of the roof over a 12 inch length. So if the roof rises 6 inches over one foot, it has a 6 in 12 slope or a 6-12 pitch.

To determine your slope or pitch, take a 12 inch level and place one end on the roof. Make the other end of the level even and measure the length down. This is the rise. Put that number, in inches, over 12 and you have the slope or pitch.
